PATHOGEN CONTROL
THE IMPORTANCE OF SCIENCE:
Interrupting the chain of infection by adding a critical layer of engineered source-level control
It is critical to understand that people are the major source of contamination and disease transmission. The recent pandemic continues to highlight the need to add engineered source-level controls at the point where contamination is occurring. The UV Angel Clean Air™ technology has been specifically designed as an engineered source level control system, operating independent of the HVAC system and other infection control measures, right at the room-level within occupied spaces. The Adapt™ technology continuously monitors when surfaces such as keyboards and touch screens have been used, and safely treats them to neutralize surface contamination. While originally designed for use in health care environments, more industries are seeking to improve surface and air quality amid the
pandemic.
- Contamination occurs at the room source level by people
- Transmission happens as people interact in normal business environments
- Contamination occurs when you do not know it
- Technology designed to reduce environmental pathogen loading at the room-level is critically important
- Treating the air and surfaces with automated engineering source controls
- Implementing technology that can run in the background to treat air and surfaces 24 x7 365

What the science tells us
People are the major source of contamination and disease transmission

Humans shed 37 Million bacteria per hour.

Air transports the pathogens that infect people
and contaminate surfaces
All pathogens can become airborne
• NIH reports Coronavirus remains airborne up to 3 hours
• Many pathogens remain elevated in the air for long periods of time
• Air can be more contaminated than surfaces.
• A healthcare study concluded the air is most contaminated in a
room 1 hour after cleaning.
Even breathing can spread infection
• Influenza patients breathe the virus out in tiny particles that can stay
suspended in the air for minutes or hours
Treating the air, cleans the surfaces
• Reducing pathogens from the air can lower surface contamination
by as much as 66%
CDC: Individuals whose hands are contaminated with a live virus
may contaminate up to 7 additional clean surfaces.
PROBLEM:
Some solutions today are not as effective at solving these issues as an engineered source-level control
Poor Indoor Air Quality
Many Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) problems are associated with indoor contaminant sources
Touching Dirty Surfaces
The dirty surfaces around us are subject to dirty air and therefor are another source of pathogen transmission
Unvalidated Ineffective Solutions
Many current solutions lack validation. Limited effectiveness shown at the occupied room level along with potential safety concerns
Cleaning Practice Errors
Manual cleanings are subject to human error and may not be sufficient. They should be supplemented with proven engineering controls
SOLUTION:
Adding Engineered Room Level Source Control is critical in preventing disease transmission at the source.
Federal recommendations for engineering controls

The most effective protection measures are (listed from most effective to least effective). In most cases, a combination of control measures will be necessary to protect workers from exposure to SARS-CoV-2.
These types of controls reduce exposure to hazards without relying on worker behavior and can be the most cost-effective solution to implement.1
Consider using ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) as a supplement to help inactivate the virus.2
Strongly recommend; good evidence – Upper-room UVGI (with possible inroom fans) as a supplement to supply airflow
EFFECTIVE COVID-19 MEASURES

What is Engineered Source Level Control?
Engineered source level control provides a comprehensive solution to solving pathogen spread through science and technology by targeting the source of the problem within occupied spaces.

“Experts agree this is likely not the last pandemic, or outbreak, we will face. Going forward, innovative companies must shift from response to prevention to protect employees and customers.”
Not the last pandemic: Investing now to reimagine publichealth systems
McKinsey Article, July 13, 2020
The COVID-19 crisis reminds us how underprepared the world is to detect and respond to emerging infectious diseases. We must make smart investments now to simultaneously navigate COVID-19 and prepare for future pandemics. Go from “Break glass in case of emergency” response systems to “Always on” systems and partnerships.

WHO warns COVID-19 pandemic is ‘not necessarily the big one’
NYT Reporting, December 29, 2020
“This pandemic has been very severe,” Ryan said, according to Agence France-Presse. “It has spread around the world extremely quickly and it has affected every corner of this planet, but this is not necessarily the big one.”
He stressed that while the virus is “very transmissible, and it kills people … its current case fatality (rate) is reasonably low in comparison to other emerging diseases.
“We need to get ready for something that may even be more severe in the future,” Ryan added.
